2011 Daytime Emmy Awards: What happened in Vegas should have stayed in Vegas

If any of that sounds fantastic to you, then the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were definitely not to be missed, and here's hoping your DVR caught all the action if you weren't home.  If, however, you were interested in soap operas, soap stars or anything else related to the daytime drama world, then you'll find more soapiness watching "The History Channel." They weren't wrong.  First was the omission of broadcasting the red carpet.  Not getting to cheer and jeer at the gowns, questionable shoe choices, obviously-borrowed jewelry and guessing who fought in the limo on the way over is a slap in the face to soap fans.  However, once the show got going, you were wishing that none of it had been broadcast. ), moving to a faceful of bad polyester jumpsuits in a totally non-soap-related number from Cirque du Soleil's "Viva Elvis," and careening into a dizzying and unwelcome step back into the 1970's - though with a song from the 1940's - with a tooth-filled military salute from Marie Osmond in the most dreadful, 2am-on-a-street-corner purple getup ever televised, the entire evening was like a disturbing technicolor brochure for visiting - or perhaps avoiding - Sin City.  What few actual soap opera awards were interspersed with this Las Vegas Visitor's Bureau montage were so rushed, you weren't even positive who had won without a rewind.  You ever hear those car commercials on the radio?  The ones where, in the end, the guy gives all the stipulations and qualifications for 0% financing loans, and he talks so fast, you're not sure if it's in English?  Same procedure with the announcement of the nominees.  Like the guy's pants were on fire.   was safe from cancellation, only to be beheaded without warning, was still standing in front of her fellow soap actors, praising the talent in the room and declaring daytime television to be "alive and well."  God love that sweet pixie, but lets face it.  It's not alive and well.  In fact, it's on life support, and the networks are about to pull the plug. There actually may have been a fourth tie since Alex Trebek and Pat Sajak both received Lifetime Achievement Awards.  Maybe they had to duke it out with trivia questions in the casino later to see who got to keep the statue as I'm guessing the show was too broke for multiple awards after blowing their funds on the horrid non-musings of Penn and Teller.

Five years later, 'Love' proves recession-proof while 'Phantom' makes concessions

Instead, "Love" is the show Cirque now struggles to live up to, the one that made two successive Las Vegas titles ("Criss Angel: Believe" and "Viva Elvis") look labored and uneven by comparison. Champagne credits McCartney and music producer George

The coolest show in a town that's hot and getting hotter

Some careers are reinvigorated by Vegas: indeed, it was here that Elvis Presley famously made his stage comeback (and is even now back onstage, not just in the many impersonator acts around town, but in his own Cirque du Soleil show, Viva Elvis,

In Las Vegas, Easter bunnies and candy eggs are replaced with pomps and pinups as the Viva Las Vegas show rolls in to the Orleans.

This was our first year at Viva and what a crazy time it was. On our way, across the California desert Friday afternoon, we got word from our Hub Buddy Bad Ass Bob of a Garage Tour at Tucker Performance. While there we were invited to a private party at the clubhouse/shop for Sanitarium Cycles / Welderup . While there we heard of a cool little show in the shadow of the Stratosphere, the Rat City Ruckus and from there, was a buzz about Sunday Slacker Magazines party on the Westside called Lowbrow Las Vegas. We even found time to visit the Pawn Shop and Counts’ Customs, before heading into the main show, Viva Las Vegas, only two hours before it closed.

You can read about the Viva show in my article on my friend Genevieve Chappell’s blog “ TheQueenofCars.com ” here.

RAT CITY RUCKUS At Rat City Ruckus we ran into the recently recovered Bo Huff. Looking great and with a sweet betty on his arm, he was there to wish everyone a great time at the show. His Ford Ranchero was there on display. What a great, historic custom. Our new friends from Welderup had a big posse there showing the rusted masterpieces we saw at their party the night before.

LOWBROW LAS VEGAS Finally we rolled into the Viva Las Vegas car show late in the afternoon to catch the party in full-swing. Car clubs huddled around their cars, rock-a-bettys strutting their new doos and outfits and Jerry Lee Lewis rockin’ the crowd.

We met up with our new friend Amy who is opening a retro and rock-a-billy clothing and accessory store for men and women in town – Rockin Bettie. Then we ran into Mitzi Valenzuela , famous pinup photographer and new artist on the scene BOMONSTER . After the show ended at 8pm I shot some video of the cars rolling out. Take a look at our YouTube channel to see the flames and hear the pipes roar!

From Friday afternoon to Sunday morning, the Viva Las Vegas weekend was hot, hot, hot and following the rods through the desert home was an added bonus.
