Music must be just right for choreographer Hurley
When Kathleen Hurley hears music she likes, she doesn't just tap her toes. She fidgets. She moves to the beat, even at concerts.
"It's hard for me to sit still," she said with a quick laugh. "Sometimes people don't like to sit next to me."
But that impulse pays off. The Des Moines choreographer's company, Hurley and Dancers, will showcase eight of her dances, plus three by other members, during a free program called "Barefoot in the Park" on Saturday at Greenwood Park.
The pieces are all short - five or six minutes each - and their music ranges from the Beatles to a version of "My Funny Valentine" by the local band Asphalt and Stained Glass.
"We try to have some pieces that are really artsy and some that are accessible for people who haven't seen modern dance," Hurley said. "It's a mixture of older pieces from our repertoire and some new pieces we're trying out for next season."
Audience members can watch from the newly renovated benches at the park's Sylvan Theater, or spread out a picnic on a blanket nearby.
The cast includes Katie Crouch, Alissa Hamer, Carla Hughes-Olson, Jennifer Lapp, Lisa Lewis, Lana Lyddon-Hatten, Paula McArthur and Hurley herself, who will fly to Belgium next month to teach dance for a week in Antwerp.
If she takes headphones, it could be a long flight for the person next to her.
"For me, the music usually comes first," she said of her creative process. "It has to hit me. If it doesn't strike me as something to dance to right away, I won't use it."
