Who'll champion transit in Hamilton?
Those advocating a big investment in Hamilton’s transit system say the project needs a political champion.
None was to be found at a workshop luncheon series Tuesday called Why Transit Matters! No Hamilton city, provincial or federal politician was in attendance.
Keynote speaker Paul Bedford , a member of the Metrolinx board of directors and a former chief planner for Toronto, bluntly pointed out the absence.
“There are no politicians here and that disappoints me. The mayor should be here and the whole damn council. Political leadership is essential. You need champions who push and make a lot of noise.”
He says Hamilton’s leaders have to advocate for all-day GO train service and for funding commitments to LRT and stop the natural political inclination to do nothing and avoid risks.
Cities around the world have used transit to build their urban cores, attract interesting residential development, relieve congestion and boost prosperity.
“There is no city on earth that I know of that has decided to build a transit line or a subway line and decided to rip it out. You are making a 100-year decision, don’t forget that.
“Hamilton is at a very critical stage to think big and to think long term.”
He said the public will is there to put money into transit and will only grow as gas prices continue to rise.
Gridlock, and its economic, social and environmental impacts, is the biggest issue facing the Golden Horseshoe, said Bedford. Growth will bring the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area to 10 million people in the next 20 years. That will require huge transportation investments.
Mark Chamberlain, chair of the Jobs Prosperity Collaborative , one of the hosts of the transit event, echoed the call for a political champion to advocate for Hamilton’s transit needs.
“If we don’t do this right, jobs and business will go to Waterloo, where they are getting it right.”
Bedford also praised a vote by the Region of Waterloo last week to push forward with an $818-million light-rail line linking the downtowns of Kitchener and Waterloo. Regional council voted for a tax hike to pay the municipality’s cost of the project.
Hamilton has a second great opportunity to land light rail now, after passing up a chance in the 1970s, says Bedford. He pointed out that it took 44 years to build the Yonge subway line in Toronto. It was first proposed in 1910.
