The manager of the electrical and electronics verification and test group at Volvo 3P, Quigley's group tests the Volvo trucks' instrument panels and makes sure all the microcontrollers, or embedded systems, work correctly with the software and hardware that control an array of sophisticated safety features. These include adaptive cruise control, which actually slows down a truck if it comes within a certain distance of a vehicle in front of it, and lane departure warning, which alerts the driver to the vehicle crossing a lane marker.
Making sure all the pieces of this puzzle come together is project management, the discipline of planning, organizing, securing and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives.
When you're designing and engineering large sophisticated trucks that can cost about $100,000 and upward and are driven 100,000 to 150,000 miles a year, Quigley said meticulous attention to detail is crucial in the development of the product as well as testing for quality control.
He said project management involves breaking down a project into manageable pieces and then proceeding sequentially while minimizing risk and maximizing resources. He likened it to putting a complex jigsaw puzzle together.
"I like the challenge of putting the puzzle together and learning something new," Quigley said. "I'm energized by those kind of things."
Quigley said he began writing books on project management with his business partner to help others in similar lines of technical work. A couple of years ago, he and Kim Pries of El Paso, Texas, who also has extensive experience as a project manager, formed a company, Value Transformation, a product development training and cost improvement consulting firm. Together, they have more than 50 years experience in the field.
"The company is basically how we apply the things we write about," Quigley said, noting he will be speaking at an international conference on quality assurance and testing in Bilbao, Spain, in October.
The first book published, in October 2008, was "Project Management of Complex and Embedded Systems," followed by "Testing Complex and Embedded Systems" and "Scrum Project Management," both published in 2010. "Total Quality Project Management for Project Managers" and "Reducing Process Cost with Lean, Six Sigma and Value Engineering Techniques" are scheduled to be published later this year and in early 2012. They are published by CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group.
