Boynton library cuts hit hours, popular genealogy resources

&Mdash; In a region where all but a few are from somewhere else, it's hard enough to track local genealogy. It's about to get harder.

Under the city's proposed 2011-12 budget, the library will stop all history and genealogy memberships.

The savings: $375.

What this mostly means is people won't be able to read the organizations' newsletters, chief librarian Craig Clark said.

"I can justify (keeping) it," he said. "But I have to cut."

History memberships are the least of it. The proposed budget for the library would cut $176,757.

Hours, cut last year from 62 a week to 54, would be slashed to 48, from

9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. weekdays, instead of 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Two vacant full-time spots wouldn't be replaced and one full-time staffer and one part-timer would be laid off.

Teen programs would be all but eliminated.

Clark said he'd already closed the $2,000-a-year account for Ancestry.com last year. People seeking genealogy help now will be referred to the Historical Society of Palm Beach County or other groups.

For this year, the library seeks $137,000 for new materials, down from last year's $152,000.

E-books help. A $1,000 donation from Friends of the Boynton Beach City Library paid for three Nook readers the library can lend.

All of this comes, ironically, at a time when library use has blossomed. Many people use library computers and reference materials to, more and more, seek a job.

"It's unfortunate," Clark said. "People need us the most now. And we're having to cut back and cut back."

Zagare got it right. This city has a habit of taking from those in need. The library serves those without computers at home, seniors and low income as well as many others - the city cut hours, service and staff of it while looking to spend just as much if not more on old high school for eventually someone else(private developer) and also looks to add women's club. Unreal. Boynton Beach City Library provides essential services to the community and helps support the economy. Public support for the library helps create jobs, increase wages, and attract business. Especially during these economically difficult times the library is a valuable resource for job seekers and for many the only access to electronic government services.

A New Take on “Let Me Read Your Palm”

Don’t be surprised if the next time you visit your Doctor or a Medical Center, someone asks if they can “read your palm.”

New York University’s Langone Medical Center is using biometric infrared scanning to create digital palm images to track patients.

“Vein patterns are 100 times more unique than fingerprints,” Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, senior vice president and vice dean, chief of hospital operations at NYU Langone, said in a release.

Correctly identifying the right medical records for each patient by name alone is particularly problematic — the medical center has had two or more patients with the same first and last names more than 125,000 times.

PatientSecure uses infrared light to create an image of the blood-flow pattern through the veins in the patient’s palm. The image is then converted to a unique patient identifier that can be used by the medical center’s electronic health records system, which went online June 5 for certain functions, reports Neil Versel in Information Week .

Correctly identifying the right medical records for each patient by name alone is particularly problematic — the medical center has had two or more patients with the same first and last names more than 125,000 times. You just put your palm on the scanner and you’re done registering at your doctor’s office, no clipboard, no hassle of paperwork to check in, plus, it’s absolutely secure,” said patient Michael Baldwin in the release. “It’s immediate and instantaneous,” he added.
