Vacation the smart way: 6 ways to save money while on holiday

You want to go on vacation, but you don't want to annihilate your savings account. And yet, you also don't want to feel limited by your budget, either. There are a few steps you can take to keeps costs low and still have a blast this summer.

Book all tickets in advance. Yeah, it sounds obvious, but how many of us procrastinate? Sign up for alerts from travel aggregators like Kayak.com to your favorite destinations, so you know when a good deal comes along. Or if you have frequent-flier miles accrued with an airline, check its website often.

Don't book the high-end hotel. As tempting as it may be, you don't need all those bells and whistles. You can always visit the fancier hotels for a lunch date or go out to dinner at one of the upscale hotel restaurants. In Palm Springs, the Caliente Tropics doesn't have a pool or a restaurant, but it gets great reviews on TripAdvisor.com, it's clean and the rooms have been updated. Book there and take a three-minute stroll to the trendy Ace Hotel, where you can have lunch poolside and enjoy the fancier digs for a few hours.

Give up a tiny bit of convenience to save a little cash. When visiting Las Vegas, for instance, it's tempting to stay front-and-center on the Strip, at glamorous places like the Wynn or the Bellagio, but lodging a half mile away at a non-gambling hotel like the Platinum Hotel can save you a pretty penny and get you more bang for your buck ($107 nabs you a 950-square-foot suite!).

Book a room with a refrigerator (or bring your own portable cooler): Nate

Silverman, a self-described "budget vacation expert," says: "Food is the biggest money waster. Avoid eating out when possible. Take snacks and simple breakfasts to make in your room." Instead of blowing a wad of cash on overpriced drinks, thanks to that fridge, you can get the party started early: Sip some store-bought bubbly before heading out on the town. You'll save by not splurging on that $12 glass of sparkling wine.

Do an apartment swap or a vacation rental. For longer stays, consider renting a house or swapping your own. You can take advantage of all those amenities - like a kitchen, pool or Jacuzzi. With the use of a washer and dryer, you won't have to tote as many clothes with you (cutting down on your luggage costs with the airlines). In addition to Craigslist, sites like HomeAway.com and HomeExchange.com are good sources for finding a nontraditional place to stay. "With no hotel bills, home exchange has become the best way to experience your destination like a local," says Keghan Hurst, a spokesperson with Home Exchange.
