The American dream in Romania: US investors

Coca Cola, Pepsi, Bunge and Procter&Gamble are among the leaders on the food&drinks and the consumer goods markets, while Oracle, Microsoft, HP and IBM are the leaders of the IT&C sector in Romania. The McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut franchises dominate the restaurants business. Although the franchise owners are not American themselves, the brands are. Ford and Delphi are powerful investors in the auto industry.

The American participation in Romanian companies is currently of about USD 1 billion (EUR 800 million), which is 2.75 percent of total foreign direct investments, according to data from the Romanian Trade Registry Office (ONRC) at the end of February. However, many American companies choose to invest through their European divisions, which makes the total investments much higher.

Here’s a list of the most important American companies which operate in Romania:

Industry:

Automaker Ford Motor Company bought the car factory in Craiova in 2007, when it was privatized by the Romanian Government. Although Ford’s production in Craiova is still low, this could become one of the largest American businesses in Romania in the following years. Ford representatives say the company invested EUR 350 million in Craiova since they took over.

Some of the largest American investments are in the auto components industry, where Delphi, TRW Automotive and Johnson Controls run some of the largest operations in Romania. Delphi, who is one of the largest auto components producer in the world, has four factories in Romania and over 10,000 employees. The group recently announced that it will add another 800 employees in the new factory at Moldova Noua (Caras Severin county) where it produces electrical cables. The other three factories are located in Iasi, Sannicolau Mare and Ineu.

American group Cameron , which produces oil equipment for oil giants such as ExxonMobil, has a production facility in Campina (Prahova county) and its business amounted to EUR 92 million in 2009. The company announced in 2009 that it will invest about 80 million dollars in a new factory in Ploiesti.

Timken also has a factory in Ploiesti where it produces bearings. The company had revenues of almost EUR 70 million in 2009.

Mercedes Benz E Class increases Efficiency | AnyAuto

The Merecedes Benz E-Class saloon is again raising the bar, and showing how the intelligent interaction between technical innovations throughout the powertrain can reduce fuel consumption even further.

For example, in the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY a combination of the new 7G­ TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and the standard ECO start/stop function has led to a decrease in consumption by over 10 percent compared to the outgoing model.

Comprehensively improved automatic transmission: 7G-TRONIC PLUS

This comprehensively improved 7-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment in the E-Class range. One major feature of the latest evolutionary phase of 7G-TRONIC is a new generation torque converter with a much more dynamic response. Noise and vibration levels have also been reduced thanks to a new hydraulic circuit, improved dampers and a new torque converter lock-up clutch with considerably reduced slip even under low loads.

With low-friction bearings and seals, as well as a new transmission fluid with lower viscosity, the transmission itself also contributes to fuel economy. Thanks to the long service life and unchanged cooling efficiency of the transmission fluid, this now only needs to be replaced every 125,000 kilometres. The transmission’s improved electro-hydraulic control unit and new, low-friction materials in various areas, as well as optimised software, lead to improved smoothness.

The four-cylinder diesels in the E-Class: considerable increase in efficiency

Particularly in the four-cylinder diesel variants of the E-Class, the ECO start/stop function and 7G-TRONIC PLUS make for a considerable increase in efficiency. The engine specialists have also optimised the oil pressure control and belt drive, and equipped the turbocharger with a self-regulating compressor.

In the E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 125 kW and E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 150 kW with the standard 7G-TRONIC PLUS, combined consumption and CO2 emissions have fallen by 16 percent to 5.1 l/100 km and 135 g/km.

The comprehensive update to the powertrain has also brought significant fuel savings for the four-cylinder petrol engine. The E 250 BlueEFFICIENCY, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of 7.2 l/100 km and 166 g/km are five percent lower than the figures for the preceding model with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Comfort and design: perfected in detail

In addition to the new powertrain features, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class now has new interior and exterior details. These include the full-colour TFT display in the instrument cluster, which is also capable of showing three-dimensional graphics. Another new feature is the standard DIRECT-SELECT selector lever for 7G­TRONIC PLUS on the steering column – also in the four-cylinder models. The driver is able to select transmission positions “P”, “N”, “R” and “D” by nudging a selector on the steering column. The operating commands are transmitted electronically, by cable. The package includes steering wheel gearshift paddles. Another standard feature in the ELEGANCE line is the luxury front head restraint, whose side bolsters can be adjusted as required.
