Diane Krings knows there are some things she can’t control, like prices at the gas pump and inflated costs on consumer goods and groceries. But, Krings knows she can control what she chooses to spend on a particular item.

The Anthem at-home mom’s two fun-loving children, Tanner, 4, and Zoey, 1, keep her active and busy, but during her downtime she has discovered another pastime: Creative couponing.

“With so many prices on the rise these days, I’m just looking for ways to save my family money,” she said.

Inspired by TLC’s “Extreme Couponing,” Krings decided to give it a try. In the short time she’s been at it, she found dedicating just a couple hours each week to searching the ads and scouring coupon websites, and investing in a trusty binder with clear plastic inserts to organize the clippings—she has shaved nearly a third off of her monthly grocery expenses.

New Trends and Old Habits

She’s in good company. According to a Nielsen study, coupon redemptions grew by 27 percent in 2009. The study showed newspaper inserts are still the primary method of coupon distribution (89 percent) and redemption (53 percent), but Internet redemption growth rose by 263 percent in 2009.

Other paperless coupons like electronic checkout and digital promotions have also increased. More affluent households dominated coupon usage, as studies showed household incomes of $100,000 and up were the primary drivers of coupon growth in 2009.

But, are couponers like Krings saving on essentials, or are they loading their cart with the latest snacks and processed foods typically promoted in the weekly inserts?

While she admits she used to do the latter when she dabbled with coupons, her savings never amounted to much.

Stack the Savings

Today, Krings is all  about saving on items her family uses regularly, clipping coupons only for items she knows she’ll use, and stacking store coupons with manufacturer coupons to multiply the savings. 

Krings is saving an average of $75–$100 each month. And, with two kids in tow, she is on a mission to get in and out of the store quickly.

Her biggest score so far: 10 boxes of name-brand pasta. The cost after the sale price and coupons for each item: Free. Another great buy: Laundry detergent, normally on the shelf for $4.75 for a 32-load bottle, Krings snagged it on sale for $2.88, and with another $1 coupon, she paid less than half of retail.
