SUNO to build on-campus business incubator

Southern University at New Orleans has received approval from the Louisiana Board of Regents to build a $3 million business incubator on its campus.

More than $2 million will come from the U.S. Department of Education’s Title III-College Cost Reduction and Access Act program. The facility will be located near the school’s College of Business and Public Administration building and is expected to be completed in two years.

The facility will also serve as office space for entrepreneurs and will contain faculty and staff offices.

“We’ve all seen that New Orleans is serving as a model for entrepreneurship for the nation,” Chancellor Victor Ukpolo said in a press release. “This provides entrepreneurs with another prime opportunity to grow their businesses and achieve the American dream in their respective lives.”

The facility will also support the College of Business and Public Administration’s accreditation plan by allowing faculty to deliver more practical teaching, research , community service and meet other accreditation requirements from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Louisiana Board of Regents to Manage Fiber Network with Esri

April 19, 2011

Redlands, California— The State of Louisiana Board of Regents recently selected geographic information system (GIS) technology from Esri and Esri partner 3-GIS to manage its fiber network and oversee construction of new infrastructure. The Louisiana Board of Regents plans, coordinates, and maintains budgetary responsibility for the state's public higher education community, including 19 public colleges, universities, and professional schools.

"To make this project move forward affordably, our stakeholders will need information in the least amount of time," said Lonnie Leger, director of networking for the Louisiana Board of Regents. "GIS technology from Esri and 3-GIS provides the flexibility we needed to achieve our goals."

The organization will use GIS to manage the routes, fibers, and manholes of 12,000 existing miles of network. GIS will also play a key role as the board begins construction of 900 miles of new infrastructure funded by the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP).

For telecommunications companies, Esri technology gives employees an accurate view of the system and a database that can be accessed from the office and the field. Esri also helps with the management of existing corporate assets and the capture of data in real time.
