I think too that a company ought to be free to build a plant in any state it wants. But again, my government disagrees. The federal agency says the aircraft maker chose South Carolina in retaliation against its union in Washington, the company's home state. That claim, as best I can tell, is baseless. Boeing doesn't propose to transfer any union jobs from Washington to South Carolina, a right-to-work state. In fact, the company's workforce in Washington State is as robust as it's ever been. And if one believes in economic incentives, Boeing's response to the NLRB will be to shift jobs overseas, where the federal agency has no jurisdiction over the company's labor practices. The losers here will be jobless South Carolinians. But what happens to the South Carolina plant is beside the point. The point is that Boeing ought to be able to build a plant in any state that welcomes it. I don't think the NLRB's ruling against Boeing will stand, but again, we'll see. Liberty has limits of course. I cannot shout "fire" in a crowded theater because someone might get injured in the rush to the exit. But if my decisions affect no one but me, I should be free to make them. These days, that's not always possible, and I wonder what our Founding Fathers would think of that.
