Hard-touring, trailer-dwelling Hymn For Her stops at Mousetrap

In a recent telephone interview from their 16-foot Airstream Bambi trailer, which was parked somewhere in Utah, Wayne Waxing of the duo Hymn For Her wasn't quite ready to answer questions after his "soulmate" and bandmate Lucy Tight had fielded a few.

A shout from the other end of the trailer rang out as Lucy went to hand him the phone, "Wait, I'm naked!"

The response was hilarious and fairly unexpected, but then again, considering that the band's most recent album cover features Lucy and Wayne slamming beers and grilling outside their trailer - while Lucy breast-feeds - what else would one expect?

Hymn For Her, which hails from "anywhere they can park their trailer," has made their mark with that sort of hillbilly lifestyle, touring, recording and living all in the comfort of their home on wheels. And since they're always on the road, the group's nomadic existence has influenced their sound as much as anything else.

"It's ingrained in our system," Waxing said. "There was a point where I used to question getting up at 4 a.m. and loading up the van once again ... but now I'm just a touring machine."

Hymn for Her's current tour, which will take the group all around the country through December, stops in Eau Claire for a performance at 10 p.m. Saturday at The Mousetrap Bar.

Along with their lifestyle, the band's choice of instrumentation has taken on the same rugged, do-it-yourself approach.

In addition to playing multiple instruments at one time, Waxing and Tight also make some of their own instruments for a different take on their Americana roots - such as the cigar box guitar, which is four strings across a cigar box attached to a broom or plunger handle (Wayne couldn't remember which).

Tight and Waxing started performing together as an acoustic duo. But it wasn't until after the group started playing their homemade instruments and added a baby, a dog and the trailer to their touring regiment that Waxing said real inspiration came about.

"It's a metamorphosis that keeps happening," Waxing said. "Everything just keeps snowballing into the sound that you have."
