Glentoran's eastern promise
Glentoran have strengthened their links with the east Belfast community with the launch of their ‘Our Club, Our Community’ programme.
The three-year programme is funded by the International Fund for Ireland’s Community Bridges Programme and Belfast City Council’s Good Relations Partnership.
Glentoran chairman, Terence Brannigan, said: “Glentoran Football Club has its roots strongly embedded in East Belfast and, as such, has a responsibility to take a leading role in our local community and to make a positive and sustained contribution thereby helping address real community need.
“Through this Programme we will actively work within our local community to deliver a range of initiatives that will reach out to all sections of our community in order to make a lasting and measurable difference to our society.”
The Glentoran ‘Our Club, Our Community’ Programme has implemented a range of projects within the local community since it commenced in November 2010. This includes a Stakeholder Workshop to introduce the Programme to key community representatives and commissioning independent consultants to conduct a Community Relations Audit to provide a ‘snapshot’ of the perception of Glentoran within the wider community.
Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: “The vision of the programme is central to much of what my own department is seeking to achieve through sport.”

• ArtsEkta, who will be working with Dance Ihayami, Short Strand Young Women`s Group and Women United to deliver `Journeys through Dance` – a project devised to promote good relations and raise cultural awareness based on dance, stories, myths and legends of South Asia. It will provide personal development opportunities for 35 participants from Ardoyne and Ballymacarrett and reach a projected audience of 25,000 people at performances at the Belfast Mela in Botanic Gardens, Custom House Square and St George`s Market. • Beyond Skin, who will be working with the Chinese Welfare Association and Ravenlink Residents Association to deliver `Belfast East`, a project which will engage 1,200 participants from Ballyhackamore, Ballymacarrett, Belmont, Bloomfield, Orangefield, the Mount and Woodstock and reach an audience of approximately 4,500. Its aim is to improve communications between different ethnic and cultural groups through a programme including radio programmes, exhibitions and art and animation workshops. • Creative Exchange, who will be working with East Belfast Partnership and Engine Room Gallery on `Urban Meadows` which will result in community landscaping and small recreational areas on a derelict and underused piece of land on the Newtownards Road. The project will engage 100 participants from Ballyhackamore, Ballymacarrett, Bloomfield, Island, Sydenham and The Mount and an audience of 300, as well as the many people who pass the area daily. • Dance United NI, who will be working with Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre and New Lodge Arts to produce `Merge`, a dynamic large-scale creative project that will be performed in T13, the Urban Park Warehouse in Titanic Quarter. Eighty young unemployed people aged 16-25 living in areas of social need across the city - Ballymacarrett, Clonard, Falls Park, New Lodge, Shankill, the Mount, Upper Springfield, Whiterock, and Woodvale - will participate in the project, and it`s anticipated that the performance - incorporating an innovative mix of BMX biking, contemporary dance, urban street dancing, rap, opera singing, skate boarding and visual arts - will draw an audience of around 800. The programme aims to improve the participants` physical and mental heath, increase social and communications skills and help combat feelings of isolation.
