Regrets? PT Cruiser owners have a few

Talk about buyer’s remorse.

“First of all, the car is ugly. We only got it because we were stupid,” said the blunt post by a Chrysler PT Cruiser owner who might very well need therapy.

And there’s plenty of remorse to go around.

Chrysler’s crowd-pleasing gangster staff car was a big hit when deliveries began in early 2000. Customers happily paid a hefty premium over the sticker price to get one of the first retro-chic models, which looked like nothing else on the road.

Owners’ initial reports were glowing but, as the kilometres racked up, the shine started to come off Chrysler’s affordable halo car.

CONFIGURATION

The front-drive PT Cruiser first arrived only as a five-door wagon. Its 1930s-inspired shape lent itself well to today’s hauling demands. The high roofline and upright greenhouse yielded a spacious interior, especially considering it was 16 cm shorter than a Neon.

The yawning rear hatch revealed a flexible cargo hold, where seats flipped, flopped or could be yanked out completely to make room for freight. Strut towers were passed over in favour of a twist-beam rear suspension that didn’t compromise interior space.

The seats were high off the floor, giving occupants small-SUV-like visibility, lots of legroom and ease of entry. The chair-like seating was a godsend for people with weak knees, bad hips and other mobility issues.

The dashboard used off-the-shelf Chrysler bits, but there were bold styling strokes, too. Trim pieces mimicked the exterior paint (available in a wild palette of colours) and optional leather included patches of suede in high-touch areas.

The standard upholstery was roundly criticized for discolouring too easily: “I never knew water could stain like coffee,” wrote one owner.

The lone engine was a 2.4 L DOHC four cylinder, making 150 hp and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. Owners could choose between a cable-operated Getrag five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic.

For 2003, the GT model packed a 215-hp turbocharged version of the same engine. A Turbo Lite arrived for 2004, the low-pressure iteration making 180 horses. The long-awaited convertible appeared for 2005.

All ’06-model PTs got revised front fascias and updated dashboards. Perhaps unsure how to top its unique styling, the Cruiser would, ahem, cruise on its good looks for five more years.

Stopping to smell the… rubber.

Last May, Porsche called to ask if I wanted to transport a Boxster Spyder from San Francisco to Los Angeles for them. Obviously, I didn't say no. And rather than brave 400 miles of cop-infested I-5, I took the Pacific Coast Highway.

Either way there is no room to add an additional radiator to help prevent the overheating if you're running an intercooled turbo kit because there's nowhere to add what would then be a 4th radiator.
