From Enterprise to Endeavour: A guide to NASA's space shuttles

Enterprise (OV-101)

Enterprise was a test vehicle and wasn't built to fly in space. Construction was completed in 1976, the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. The vehicle was originally to be named Constitution as part of the bicentennial celebration but a write-in campaign to the White House led to the vehicle being named for the ship in the popular "Star Trek" television show.

Enterprise was transported 36 miles from its Palmdale, Calif. assembly center to Edwards Air Force Base for the approach and landing test program that lasted nine months, which determined the vehicle could fly in the atmosphere and land like a plane. A Boeing 747 was also tested with Enterprise riding piggyback to determine that would be an efficient way to transport Enterprise.

Enterprise came to Huntsville's Marshall Space Flight Center on the back of a 747 on March 13, 1978. The shuttle was mated with an external tank and solid rocket boosters and underwent vibration tests. After testing, Enterprise was used mostly for promotional purposes, traveling to Europe and also the World's Fair in New Orleans.

Currently located at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Steven Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Va., near Washington, D.C., Enterprise will be retired to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City.

Columbia (OV-102)

Columbia's first four missions were deemed Operational Test Flights. The first Operational Flight was Nov. 11, 1982. Commander of the first shuttle mission, John Young, is the only shuttle astronaut to have walked on the moon. Young landed on the moon in 1972 as part of the Apollo 16 mission.

As the first shuttle in flight, Columbia weighed too much and didn't have proper equipment to assist with construction of the International Space Station. On its first mission, Columbia weighed more than 219,000 pounds.

Columbia was the only shuttle to land at the backup landing site of White Sands Space Harbor in Las Cruces, N.M., in 1982 on STS-3. Columbia carried NASA Administrator Charles Bolden on the first of his four shuttle missions on STS-61C in 1986.

The crew of STS-73 threw out the first pitch at Game Five of the 1995 World Series while in orbit. It's the first time the ceremonial first pitch has been thrown outside of the stadium.
