Green Thumb awards announced
The city of Edwardsville has awarded several local gardeners with Green Thumb awards.
Zyann Kinney, Chair, and her committee members Benna Denue, Mike Reinhardt, Wilma Jene Bond and Samantha Sponeman visited all of the nominated gardens. Twelve residential homes, one business/commercial and one civic/neighborhood garden received awards.
Each award winner has a Green Thumb sign posted in their yard and has received a congratulatory letter and award certificate from Mayor Gary Niebur.
• 512 N. Buchanan St., Jared Loyd
Melissa and Jared Loyd, in a year, have cleared over-grown shubbery and other debris to create new flowerbeds, walkways and lighting. Plant varieties include: ornamental pampas grass, feather reed pampas, zebra grasses, perennials including coralbells, English daisies, candytuft, violas, creeping phlox, and spring bulbs.

Chris and Mark Dunbar re-did their yard to include a beautiful Japanese maple, white rose bushes, a miniature pear tree, ornamental lilies and a lush lawn. A rock waterfall spills into the in-ground pool. Plant varieties include: burning and rose bushes, spireas, hollies, yews, Japanese maple and Magnolia trees, as well as perennials like coralbells, daylilies, and ajuga.

The landscaping at this home features a composition of trees and shrubs such as Japanese cut leaf maple, redbud, birch, spirea, boxwood, and blue star juniper. Other plant varieties include: variegated weigela, hosta, iris, hot pink and white penstemon, mint, rudbeckia, achillea, zinnia, and a lilac bush.

Greg and Gloria Drexelius have immaculately maintained their 1920s Craftsman bungalow and have been able to keep the roses Greg's grandmother grew. Other plant varieties include: clematis, bleeding heart, coralbells, iris, peony, hosta, coreopsis, snowball bush, lilac, Rose of Sharon, azaleas, mock orange, hydrangea and roses.Â

Miriam and Bill Burns' 1.1-acre property features an extensive variety of trees, shrubs, herbs, perennials, berries, ground cover and annuals. Plant varieites include: a century-old buckeye tree, hollies, maples, oaks, pines, sassafras, rhododendron, dogwood, crepe myrtle, lilac, fennel, sorrel, mint, basil, thyme, cilantro, lavender, black raspberry bushes, wild strawberries, Heirloom Monticello feverfew, California poppies, columbine, coreopsis. An arbor intertwined with red honeysuckle opens to a garden that contains purple trillium, multiple hydrangea, astilbe, liriope, impatiens, collected rocks and shells.
