In the midst of the controversy surrounding Arnold Schwarzenegger ’s love child, and Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York’s ahem, wiener, it would appear that temptation is everywhere.

One of my friends used to always say, “As soon as you’re taken they’ll come crawling out of the woodwork.” Well, she was right. Men are coming at me like ants just after a fresh rain when a peanut butter sandwich is left unwrapped on the kitchen counter.

The other day I was in the grocery store and a guy struck up a conversation with me. We chatted for a few moments in the checkout line and after he left, the grocery checker said, “You should go out with him – he’s cute and he was flirting with you!” I told her I had a boyfriend and she shook her head and said, “Honey, there’s no ring on your finger!” I thought to myself, does that make it okay?

It seems to be happening everywhere – the car wash, the drugstore, out with friends. Most times I don’t notice it until after because my head’s usually in the clouds thinking about something else. Plus, at this point I’m too trained to think they’re interested in the hot blond to my left instead of me. But the one thing that is unmistakable? My previous love interests are coming out of the woodwork too.

It’s as if someone sky wrote, “She’s off the market – go tempt her!” After not seeing many of them for years, I’m suddenly running into them at random. “Wow you look great,” they say, “Did you look this good when we were together?” Yes you dumb ass, I actually looked better than this and you didn’t want to be my boyfriend. So fuck off.

I recently set a few of them up with my girlfriends, and afterwards I got a phone call: “I think I like you better. Why didn’t we just stay together?” Because, you decided that you didn’t want to be my boyfriend. So kiss my ass.

As secretly flattering as it is, it’s also a little tempting. Don’t get me wrong; I’m blissfully happy with The New Guy and really have no desire to be with anyone else. But does it make me a terrible person to still be slightly tempted at times? I could go through the whole scientific research of how social monogamy evolved in human lineage, and that it isn’t in our DNA, but that’s an unnecessary discussion. The bottom line is that after being single for so many years, a teeny tiny part of me worries that there could come a time where I could fall off the wagon into the ant colony.
