Tim McCanna and Vicky Baze to join Washington Racing Hall of Fame
Trainer Tim McCanna and jockey Vicky (Aragon) Baze headline the 2011 Washington Racing Hall of Fame inductees, announced Monday by Emerald Downs.
The brilliant filly Firesweeper, champion gelding Pataha Prince and breeders Grousemont Farm of Ellensburg will also be inducted in ceremonies at Emerald Downs on Aug. 20, the eve of the 76th Longacres Mile.
Karen and Mickey Taylor, owners of legendary Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, will receive a lifetime achievement award.
McCanna, who received his trainer's license in 1981, will become the first inductee honored mainly for his body of work at Emerald Downs. The Spokane native, 49, won 10 of the track's first 15 training titles and ranks No. 1 all-time with 794 wins through July 3. His 29 stakes wins are fourth at Emerald.
Vicky Baze is the fourth jockey with the state's most famous racing surname to enter the Hall, joining Russell Baze, Joe Baze and husband Gary Baze. The 46-year-old broke into the sport in 1985 and became the first and only female to win riding titles at Longacres, in 1986 and 1988. She got her 2,000th career victory this year.
Firesweeper tied Captain Condo for most career stakes wins at Longacres with 12. Pataha Prince won six stakes races.
