Houlihan's-Crossgates closes, is being re-branded

The Houlihan's restaurant in Crossgates Mall in Guilderland closed earlier this week and will re-emerge in the fall as a restaurant called Jacob & Anthony 's Prep Kitchen.

The owners and operators remain Marello Management Group , which also owns the Bellini's Italian Eateries in Slingerlands and Clifton Park and Jacob & Anthony's American Grille in Saratoga Springs. According to the company, the Prep Kitchen will bring "back the Ivy League Prep School image" and feature a "polished casual dining environment geared towards mall shoppers and community residents of all ages. The menu will be filled with wonderful fresh salads, burgers, sandwiches and tacos, and of course J&A's Classic Entrees."

Creo introduces new menu

Brian Bowden, the new executive chef at Creo in Stuyvesant Plaza in Guilderland, debuted a summer menu, his first as head chef, earlier this week.

The menu is about 80 percent different from its predecessor, but doesn't represent a radical overhaul. The nearly 50 items are again spread over categories that include starters, pasta, pizza, salads, big plates and sides. Some Creo favorites remain, including lobster-avocado tart, eggplant napoleon and shrimp-and-crab risotto, but their preparations are being tweaked to reflect Bowden's biggest philosophical change, to a lighter menu featuring local products. A line on the menu says, " Chef Brian Bowden works with local and regional farmers to serve our guests the best produce available." Among the farms he uses are Eight Mile Creek Farm in Westerlo and Denison Farm in Schaghticoke, both organic producers.

Highlights include a salad with Maine lobster, lump crab, avocado, yellow tomatoes, mango and basil puree; a pizza with mushrooms, taleggio and egg; Parisian gnocchi with vegetables and chardonnay-herb sauce; panko-crusted halibut with red-pepper puree, spinach, fingerling potatoes and herb butter; and, in a play on a Southern dish, half a duck with a cornmeal-scallion waffle.

Taste launches patio menu, continues $20.09 deal

The restaurant Taste in downtown Albany has introduced a light-fare grill menu, being served on its terrace on Wednesday through Friday evenings, when the restaurant hosts live music. Entrees, including grilled trout, steak, shrimp or chicken, cost $14 to $22 with two sides.

Also, Taste has tweaked its second-anniversary special of three courses with choices for $20.09. Available for diners seated between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, the "Taste Testers" menu changes twice a month and features dishes that the restaurant's executive chef, Paul Ozimek , is considering putting on the dinner menu. Diners are encouraged to vote for their favorites.
