:August futures failed just over $1550 once again and as crude and grains fell back recently, gold was swept along with the selling tide to below $1500. It did hold near $1490 and has crawled back over $1500 but momentum has slowed. If the S&P continues to hold near 1260 as it has done three times during the past 2 weeks and Greece agrees to austerity programs, we should see another test of $1520 soon. If not, look for at least $1475 and possibly $1450.
Silver: July silver failed between $38 and $39 for the past few weeks and it has turned negative technically as it approaches the important $35 level. For the same reasons as with gold, the rampant speculation which drove silver to just below $50 is gone. $35 must hold and if not, $33 will come very quickly and if $33 does not hold, look out for at least $30 and possibly $27 shortly thereafter. These words from last time rang true as July silver pressed against $33 late last week. It has recovered to $33.80 as of this writing and the same factors affecting gold will move silver one way or the other. If we stabilize, $35 will be tested and maybe $36.50. If not, $33 may not hold this time and we might see further weakness to $30.50-$31.00. may be looking at buying more copper later this summer but short term demand and technical indicators are still weak. Considering that copper has been hovering near all time highs for quite a while now and US housing numbers remain abysmal, I would not expect much above 420 anytime soon. I would sell near 420 or 425 but would not attempt the long side, particularly if futures break below 390.
Currencies and Financials: The September US Dollar quietly crept higher for the past three weeks and has slid back to the short term upper trend line near 7525. European problems continue and the rise for the greenback was as much a result of weakness for Euro zone currencies as any inherent strength.
The September Pound has been in an 800 point range for the past 5 months and in a 500 point range since early May. The technical pattern has weakened and we look to test at least 16050 this week from the current 163. If momentum builds, 159 is not out of the question. These words from last time also held true as the Sept. Pound touched 15896 yesterday and 15894 today and has recovered to 16010 as of now. I would use a rise to 16150 to consider a short sale as economic conditions in Britain may be even worse than the US.
