Dear Problem Solver: I have a Singer sewing machine in a wooden case with all the bells and whistles. It’s a full size model available in the 1980s when my mother purchased it. It was in full working order three years ago when she passed away. I remember a charitable organization in Brockton snapped up the last two offered. Do they need another? I would like my mother’s legacy to have a worthy home. She was a great seamstress. Determining Your Antique Singer Sewing Machine Value
If you have an antique Singer sewing machine, then you’re probably itching to know what it’s worth. Shows like Antique Roadshow and stories of valuable discoveries can get your mind racing with ideas that spell big bucks. But before you get too excited, be forewarned. In general, Singer antique sewing machine values are pretty low, and chances are yours won’t be worth the fortune you’re imagining.
But the first thing you’ll need to do is to figure out exactly how old your machine is. You’ll want to find the serial number, and then match it up with one of the ones on the chart below. If your machine has more than one serial number, use the larger number for dating purposes. Production antique Singer sewing machines on took a long time, and was often interrupted during the war years, and since serial numbers were stamped onto the casting right at the beginning of production, so by the time the machine actually was finished being manufactured, a significant amount of time may have passed since the initial stamping.
Now that you know exactly how old your machine is, you’ll be able to better determine how much you can expect to get paid for it. People will pay more if it’s an antique than if it’s just vintage. Being older than 100 years will mark Singer sewing machines antique. If yours is not quite that old but is older than 50 years, it’s vintage. If it’s not even 50 years old, than it’s just old. Sorry.
Another consideration is condition. If you have a beautiful, functional machine, you’re in good shape (along with it!). You should be able to get at least twice what an antique dealer will offer it for. You can also put it up for sale at an auction and set the minimum bid for $20-40 with no reserve.
