LONDON 2012: Olympic football tournament struggles to capture interest

Approximately 1.5 million Olympic football tickets are still available to buy after the second round sale of seats closed to those who had failed with their initial applications.

Only two other sports - volleyball and freestyle wrestling - have tickets available, although organisers Locog expect to release one million additional seats later this year across a range of currently 'sold-out' sports.

But the issue with shifting football tickets remains a major headache, especially with continued doubts over just how representative the British men's and women's team will be.

Olympic regulations insist that all football stadia must accommodate a minimum of 30,000 spectators - but previous Games have shown these are often difficult to sell, although 2.1 million attended in Beijing at an average of 36,000 per match.

The only football match to have currently sold out is the men's final at Wembley Stadium while there is good availability for all other 57 games - which will staged across 42 sessions, with some double-headers at preliminary stages.

Ticket sales have been particularly sluggish in Cardiff and Glasgow - where support for the British team remains lukewarm at best - and only marginally better in Manchester, Newcastle and Coventry.

The Tartan Army, the official supporters club for Scotland football, has already come out in opposition to a British team while Welsh FA officials are equally unsupportive, despite the opening action of the entire Games being staged at the Millennium Stadium and the likely presence of two star Welsh players, Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, in the men's team.

But the biggest issue remains that fans don't know what teams they are buying tickets to see - with the draw not made until all qualifying teams are known in April next year.

At present six of the 16 slots in the men's tournament have been filled with Great Britain being joined by Brazil and Uruguay - defending champions Argentina failed to progress to the final of the South American Youth Championships - and the top three at the recent UEFA under-21 championships - winners Spain, runners-up Switzerland and Belarus.

Three teams are known in the 12-team women's event with Brazil and Colombia joining the hosts, while two other European sides will seek qualification during the ongoing FIFA women's World Cup.
