Moving into a loft, couple — and children — show it's not about belongings

Duncan Young knew early in his budding courtship that his wife-to-be was not the average American.

Julie and her then-young son lived in a midtown loft at the time; well-appointed, to be sure, but lacking a national hallmark: the junk drawer.

"I said, 'Where's your stuff?' " he recalled, still slightly incredulous though 7 1/2 years have since passed. No junk. No drawer.

Julie Young has strived to live minimally for years. But since turning 50 in November, she has gone for maximum impact. The Sacramento project manager and her family have spent the past two months in purge-and-pack mode, moving from a home on Sutterville Road into a 1,000-square-foot loft across the street from the Governor's Mansion in midtown.

Duncan, who works for Creative Living Options, a West Sacramento nonprofit for adults with disabilities, is giving up his workbench and two-car garage. His daughter, Lauren, and Julie Young's son, Ean Ebbert – both teens – have downsized their toys, CDs and other items. Young has pared her collection of baby videos, genealogies and travel photos to fit into two plastic bins. Even Maggie, their Shih Tzu-Pomeranian mix, has traded the expanse of Land Park for a balcony loo crafted from a plastic tray and a patch of springy turf.

This is partly a materialistic journey for Young, but it is also fittingly poetic for a woman of many faces: regional manager for Valley Commercial Contractors, president of Sacramento's Alley Activation Alliance, midtown developer, writer, traveler.

"When do you really get to start living your life is the question," Young said.

Far from a deflating milestone, turning 50 for Young, in her words, has been "round with purpose." She has lost 50 pounds through healthy eating and exercise, tried her hand at guitar, dived into a multimedia memoir project with friends and committed herself to making do with even less.

"To me, the stuff that we surround ourselves with is such a metaphor for the clutter we allow in our lives. The more you have, it is harder to get to your calling. … I am just trying to say 'Joy matters' and make space for that."

The Youngs own a piece of alley property on Capitol Avenue and will eventually build their own place as part of a mixed-use project. In the meantime, they're selling their house and renting at 16th and H streets. The move is Julie's 36th in her 50 years, she notes gamely, and this one has been more purposeful than most. The fourth-floor loft, with its treetop views of magnolias, pine and liquidambars, is two-thirds the size of the Land Park home. It has no garage. And there will be no storage rental as a fallback.
