Our coffeemaker went out recently. I called Cuisinart to see if it could be fixed. They informed me that if it is out of their warranty period of 3 years, they do not fix it and they do not even sell parts to someone else to fix it!! I found my receipt. It is 4 years old.

This is not a cheap coffeemaker. It was around $100 4 years ago.

So I went shopping to look at coffeemakers. Different manufacturers have different warranty periods, most of them being 1 year. Only 1 year!

So I have concluded that these small appliances are part of the "built in obsolescence" mentality. Manufacturers know we are hooked on our coffee, and will keep on buying them. Think about how many we will buy over our lifetimes!!

So far I have not bought a new one. Anyone suggest which brand will last for maybe 10 years?

Let's do the math. $100 / 4 years = $25 / 365 days per year = (approximately)$0.07 per day. Let's add a reasonable brand of coffee @ $8.00 for 2 weeks = ~ $0.57 per day. So you coffee maker is costing about 12% of your coffee. I'm not that good in math but you get my point. My thought is to splurge and get a GREAT coffee maker and heck get the price up to about $.95 a day. You still can't beat the cost compared to your gas/electric bill, gas for the car, taxes, and the toll bridge. Home brewed coffee is not the place to save ... go for it.

I'm all about the French Press, especially if you are brewing for just 1 person, it gives you the perfect amount and the coffee is absolutely delicious. I've had mine for at least 8 years and I'll never go back to a traditional coffee maker. Give it a try. If not, definitely just buy a cheap maker from Walmart or Target, I think they ultimately all produce the same coffee, not worth all the fancy gadgets. Remember, it just a cup of coffee, right?
