Fair St. Louis gives Illinoisans more than a five and dime
ST. LOUIS - Several Illinoisans found extra livelihood Monday working under the Gateway Arch for the Fourth of July.
Alton's own The Five and Dimers performed under the Gateway Arch opening for country sensation Montgomery Gentry on the main stage at Fair St. Louis, while several Carlinville residents worked at Allan Dennis Concessions and camped in Cahokia.
"It's quick money, you get to watch concerts for free and do a weekend getaway," Allen Dennis Concessions worker and camper Tiffany Durnin, 22, said.
Durnin, Matt Bomkamp, Matt Davis, their boss Brad Davis, all of Carlinville, and Dalton Williams, of Chatham, sold jumbo corndogs, fresh-squeezed lemonade and nachos throughout the weekend at the fair. Durnin said business slowed Sunday, but Saturday and Monday were good.
"It's an awesome experience all around," said Bomkamp, 26, who looked forward to the Five and Dimers' performance.
The Five and Dimers practiced away their nerves for several days before Monday night's show.
"We've been preparing, we're past the nervous stage and are about having fun," lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Matt Taul said early Monday afternoon.
Before Taul got the call from Entertainment Saint Louis, the band wasn't booked for the Fourth of July.
"We were eating lunch and I got a phone call; they said, 'Are you still free for Fourth of July?'" Taul recalled. "I said, 'Absolutely.' It was a nice little twist of fate. We had nothing to do and then got the best gig in St. Louis."
The Five and Dimers play more concert-type venues than the bar scene, simply because they want to play original music, Taul said. Bar owners tend to want more cover music than the Five and Dimers play.
The six-piece band formed in 2008. They usually are labeled an Americana group but Taul said their songs don't necessarily fit into one category.
"Whatever we feel like is a good song, we're in," said Taul, who was born and raised in Alton.
The other members of the Five and Dimers are Pete Klein of Staunton on lead guitar and lap steel; Matt McGibany of Alton on fiddle; Adam Peipert of Alton on banjo and backing vocals, John Masinelli of Meadowbrook on bass and backing vocals and Jeff Walker of Alton on drums and percussion.
Members of the group shared a common love of roots music and the desire to create and share locally grown original music. Taul's lyrics are thought-provoking, and the music is arranged intelligently, with an occasional sonic surprise thrown in for good measure.

“It’s America”, by Rodney AtkinsDrivin down the street today I saw a sign for lemonade They were the cutest kids I’ve seen in this front yard As they handed me my glass Smiled and thinkin to myself Man what a picture perfect postcard This would make of America It’s a high school prom It’s a Springstein song It’s a ride in a Chevrolet It’s a man on the moon And fireflies in June Kids sellin’ lemonade It’s cities and farms Its open arms One Nation under God It’s America Later on when I got home I flipped the TV on I saw a little town that some Big twister tore apart People came from miles around Just to help their neighbors out And i was thinkin’ to my self I’m so glad that I live in America It’s a high school prom It’s a Springstein song It’s a ride in a Chevrolet It’s a man on the moon And fireflies in June Kids sellin’ lemonade It’s cities and farms Its open arms One Nation under God It’s America We don’t always get it all rightTheres nowhere else I rather build my life Cause its a kid with a chance It’s a rock n roll band It’s a farmer cuttin’ hay It’s big flag flying in the summer wind Over some fallen hero’s grave. It’s a high school prom It’s a Springstein song It’s a welcome home parade It’s a man on the moon And fireflies in June Kids sellin’ lemonade It’s cities and farms Its open arms One Nation under God It’s America
I personally think it sounds idiotic. most country music these days sounds pretty stupid anyway. the lyrics are either cliches stolen from the greats or some sappy analogy, such as that stupid christmas shoes song. johnny cash would never had sung a song like that-he would have been praising god while laying a smackdown on the self-centered wuss who is singing this banal drivel.
